Crist Filer - Watercolor
September 25, 2007

Chocolate Ensemble

Intermezzo
|
The Chelmsford Art Society is featuring Crist Filer who will present a demonstration at the monthly meeting. Working mainly in watercolor and pencil, his sharp edged graphic art work, using both wet-in-wet and dry brush techniques, provides an exhilarating experience of design and color. He will donate one of his watercolors to raffle at the meeting.
Over the past several years Filer has demonstrated for most of the art associations in eastern Massachusetts and has been very well received. The artist has been juried into 168 national and regional art shows and won 88 awards for his work including five Grumbacher Gold Medals. His art, both abstract and representational, is in numerous private collections as well as that of Boston University.
Filer is past President of the New England Watercolor Society where he is a Signature Member. For his demonstrations, he puts a different slant on the information he provides the audience based on his scientific background. Dr. Filer, who has a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from M.I.T., has authored journal articles in his field. His specialty topic is isotopic chemistry, and he is the immediate past President of the International Isotope Society and has been reelected to serve as IIS president in 2008. |
Tracy Spadafora
October 30 , 2007
The Chelmsford Art Society is featuring Tracy Spadafora who will present an encaustic demonstration at the monthly meeting. She specializes in the ancient wax-based painting technique. Encaustic is the process of painting in layers of pigmented wax. It is an ancient practice, predating oil painting by roughly one thousand years. The most well-known early encaustic paintings are the Fayum portraits, poignant funereal works created in Egypt from 100 B.C. to A.D. 200. Spadafora gives workshops and demonstrations in this technique throughout the northeast including the Worcester Art Museum and DeCordova Museum School. She gives private instruction in her studio at Vernon Street Studios, 20 Vernon St., Somerville, MA. The artist's paintings are included in the following books: "Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax" by Joanne Mattera and "Collage for the Soul" by Holly Harrison and Paula Grasdal.

Yahong Shen - Chinese Brush Painting
November 27, 2007
|
The Chelmsford Art Society is featuring YAHONG SHEN who will demonstrate Chinese Brush Painting. This traditional Chinese painting has its unique style by using ink, rice paper, and calligraphic writing skills. "Poetic sentiments, picturesque language", "painting in poetry, and poetry in painting" -- these are some common sayings on the affinity between painting and poetry. In other words, a painting must have a soul, and the soul is the artist's original conception.
Ms. Shen received her Doctorate of Design degree at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. She has made Chinese brush painting her passion for years. Her artwork has appeared in solo and group exhibits in Boston, Wellesley, Chelmsford, MA and Sorrento, Maine. She has given many demonstrations in the New England area including a recent demonstration and class at the Chelmsford Library. |

The artist born and raised in France now lives in Pepperell, MA where she operates "The Gingerbread Gallery", 28 Main St. A very motivated person, she considers herself very fortunate to live in a beautiful New England town. Bernie Petruzziello - Charcoal Drawing
February 26, 2008
The Chelmsford Art Society is featuring Bernie Petruzziello, a blind artist, to demonstrate charcoal drawing and discuss his views on art. The artist studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, and worked for many years in the graphic arts field. He also taught Figure Drawing and Painting for many years at the Univ. of MA. Lowell.
Petruzziello was first diagnosed with RP, retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease, in the 1970s. Although he can no longer see, he can still vividly remember colors. Paintings which he created previous to 1996 had been in many solo and group shows where he won many awards. Now his style has obviously become more abstract and free. His paintings are much more emotional now. Presently he has a show at 119 Gallery, 119 Chelmsford St., Lowell, MA from Feb. 26 to March 22.
The Chelmsford Art Society will meet on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at 7:00 PM at the Old Town Hall, 1 North Road, Chelmsford, MA.
